HOW AN ABUSER TURNS UP THE HEAT

People who sexually victimize children have a definite pattern to their behavior—a pattern often observed by therapists and law-enforcement officials. It is not unlike the pattern of the sexual manipulator. In both instances, the desired result is their own sexual gratification, either through inappropriate conversation, physical touching, or sexual activity. This pattern is distinctive. If you were abused as a child, as you read over this pattern, analyze it in light of your own past. It is important for you to know that what happened to you was deliberate, calculated, and planned. Your actions did not cause it, did not hasten it, did not provoke it. No matter how you actually felt during the abuse, you were a victim of sexual abuse, not a participant in sexual activity.

God’s word clearly calls this kind of sexual activity sin. The bodies of our children were not given to us as objects to appease our lust. Even the non-Christians in our culture tend to agree with the Bible’s prohibition on sex between blood kin. God says, “No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations.
